In 2023, GIV celebrated 40 years of hosting life-changing learning adventures! Since 1983, GIV's Institutes have brought 12,000+ students together to forge new friendships, discover pathways to success, and find community.
In 2023, we set out to make a film that captured GIV’s past, present, and future. In creating this film, we learned that GIV has certainly grown and evolved over the years, but the core principles of our mission and philosophies of education have stayed the same.
This the story of how GIV began, how it has grown, and how it continues to change the lives of young people 40 years later.
To celebrate our 40th Anniversary, we asked 40 of our alumni, friends, families, and supporters to share what “GIV Is” to them…
Over the last 40 years, the Governor’s Institutes of Vermont (GIV) have provided life-changing educational opportunities for thousands of young Vermonters. With your support, we can reach even more incredible young people this year and for many years to come.
Your donation, no matter how big or small, will help GIV’s 40th anniversary scholarship fund. Every dollar raised will be put to immediate use, directly supporting students this summer and next.
Did you know that more than 75% of our student body receives financial assistance to attend GIV? We need you to help pay it forward and support the next generation of young Vermonters to experience the transformational impact of GIV.

On July 29th, 2023, we held a special event to commemorate 40 years of offering life-changing educational opportunities with a party at Vermont State University’s Castleton Campus!
We celebrated GIV’s past, present, and future with live music, communal art, improv comedy, a photo booth, a silent auction, a contra dance, and food trucks.
Thank you so much to everyone who took part in this event including our performers, volunteers, and supporters.
But most of all, thank you to YOU for attending, in person or in spirit!
