More than twenty-five years ago, two visionary math educators, Ken Gross and Tony Trono, looked around and saw a pressing need to deepen the teaching resources and peer support available to promising math students in Vermont. Their resultant creation, an intensive residential summer program laser-focused on applied advanced math, has enriched, delighted and propelled Vermont’s young mathematicians to success for nearly three decades, first as the Vermont Math, Science and Technology Institute for High School Students, then as the Governor’s Institutes of Vermont on Mathematical Sciences. June 28, 2018 marked the rechristening of the Institute as the Kenneth I. Gross and Anthony Trono Governor’s Institute on Mathematical Sciences as GIV gratefully received a quarter-of-a-million dollar endowment from the late Kenneth Gross and his wife Mary Lou Gross. Their generosity will ensure that the Institute keeps delivering life-changing math acceleration to young Vermonters from all backgrounds in perpetuity.
